22.00 PAULA LIMA concert
Paula Lima (vocals), Webster Santos, ex – Black Rio Band (guitar) and band.
“Paula Lima is one of the new generations of Brazilian performers who manage to combine soul and funk influences with samba & MPB, without compromising either style. She is a major international star to become - with music like this, the language barrier is irrelevant. Paula Lima is the real thing!”
Samba, bossa nova, percussions, rock and roll, Brazilian soul and the international funk, all have influenced Paula Lima. The black diva comes from the biggest city in Brazil, once accused by the great Vinicius de Moraes to be the “tomb of samba”. Indeed, São Paulo has a particular taken on music. One of the most plural cities of the world, counting more than 10 million inhabitants, most immigrants from all around the globe, the metropolis is the most international place inside a continental Brazil, a matrix for uncountable new experiments under the most diverse influences, where a new urban samba mixed with funk was created. Paula Lima represents this movement.

24.00 Brazilian party with dj GRACE KELLY (resident Mundo Mix, Berlin)
“When we talk about Grace Kelly in Berlin, we do not mean that monarch cutie from Monaco. When we say Grace Kelly, we mean the witch master behind the turntables who came to us from Bahia-Brazil, a percussionist, an excellent dancer and the cross cultural DJ who knows how to make other people dance. But if you ask the artist herself what is it exactly that she plays, she’ll stumble around in her own knowledge of tradition and modernity that snuggle their way through her magic mixes.”
Video Installation by SERGIO ULHOA
Combining Video Art, Dance and Vjing, Ulhôa focuses on the space, rhythm, detail and composition os all three forms to create a shared visual universe. The imaginary space is Ulhôa’s domain, where he reveals his world of sensations emplying extravagant color combination and refined video compositing.
12 JUNE
20.30 CARTOLA: THE SAMBA LEGEND documentary film
2006, Brazil, 85min. Directed by Lírio Ferreira, Hilton Lacerda.
This soulful documentary tells the life and times of Cartola (Agenor Oliveira), singer, poet and one of the most important Brazilian composers. Cartola was a gifted man, who despite having had little formal education, wrote samba masterpieces. His life history is very touching, mixing many survival hardships with the divine mission to bring beauty to the world through music. Cartola brought the samba into the spotlight when the radio, the strongest media vehicle of those times, ignored this genre that was then considered inferior. The film uses Cartola’s history to design a panel of the Brazilian cultural memory, searching for the roots of samba.
22.00 RODA DE SAMBA jam session with Brazilian beats
Directed by Nelson Latif (acoustic guitar and cavaquinho), with Marcelo Godoy (vocals and acoustic guitar), Brancka (vocals), Caroline Lobanov (vocals), Alaor Soares (percussion) and special guests.
Rodas de Samba are informal and unpredictable. Musicians and singers gather in a circle around a table to play samba songs. They combine personal and collective flair. In Brazil, the /rodas de samba/ serve as schools for many musicians. In this open space, singers challenge each other, talent turns into legend, composers try out new creations and the Brazilian music renews itself.
In the Brazilian Summer Sessions 2010, musicians from both nationalities will interpret traditional themes and styles, bringing to the Dutch audience the flavor and mood of this so important Brazilian way of experience popular music.

26 JUNE
20.30 THE MAN WHO BOTTLED CLOUDS documentary film
2008, Brazil, 106min. Directed by Lírio Ferreira.
Humberto Teixeira was a lawyer and a composer, who together with Luiz Gonzaga, was involved in the birth of the baião, a movement in Brazilian music in the 1940s and 1950s, later shadowed by samba and bossa nova. His daughter, actress Denise Dummont, collaborated with filmmaker Lirio Ferreira to examine the history of the baião and to pay a tribute to Teixeira.
The baião was originally a rhythm from the poor northeast of Brazil, and thanks to Gonzaga and Teixeira, it became popular in the southern metropolises of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo and in the whole country. Many of the lyrics are about the homesickness that migrants from the northeast feel for their beloved native region.

22.00 RODA DE BAIÃO & FORRÓ jam sessions with Brazilian beats
Directed by Nelson Latif (7 strings guitar and cavaquinho), with Ceumar (vocals), Alaor Soares (drums), Grupo Zabumba and special guests.
When in Brazil, most of the country is enjoying the “Festas Juninas”, a massive celebration in homage to Saint Anthony, Saint John and Saint Peter, the Roda exults the traditional rhythms from the Northeast of Brazil: the Forró and the Baião. Once regional and backwards, Forró and Baião are nowadays experiencing an incredible revival, being amongst the most popular Brazilian dance rhythms.

02 JULY
20.30 PALAVRA (EN)CANTADA documentary film
2008, Brazil, 86 min. Directed by Helena Solberg.
The documentary travels in the history of the Brazilian chanson, with a special glance at the relationship between music and poetry. From the Provençal poets to the rap, from the street carnival to the poets of the favelas, from Bossa Nova to Tropicalismo, Palavra (En)cantada moves through the Brazilian songs of early to the music of nowadays, sewing together the testimonials of the greatest names of the Brazilian culture, with fantastic musical performances and an amazing research of images.
22.30 LUIZ MELODIA concert
Luiz Melodia (vocals), Alessandro Cardozo (cavaquinho), Charles Costa (7 strings guitar) and Renato Piau (acoustic guitar).
Luis Melodia represents the power of pop samba from Rio de Janeiro. His musical blend and delightful lyrics are classics of the Brazilian music of all times. Melodia is an artist at the edge between the soul and the MPB (Música Popular Brasileira) and his mix of samba with Bossa Nova, pop and rock is memorable.
An outsider to the recording industry that has never been a popular commercial star, he is one of the greatest in Brazil. Belonging from the 70’s generation, he started his carrier during the dictatorship, in a backwards political moment of the country, that was however a moment when the flourishing of greats names of the MPB were incontestable. Melodia is a master of the lyrics, and his vocal precision and luminosity ratifies that he is also an interpreter of many talents and tinges, belonging to the nobility of the popular Brazilian music. His music is more actual than ever and it has never ceased to influence the new generations.

22.30 MOINHO concert
Emmanuele Araujo (vocals), Lan Lan (percussion and vocals), Tony Costa (guitar and vocals) and Pedro Mazillo (bass).
Moinho was conceived in 2004 by singer and actress Emanuelle Araújo, ex- vocalist of Banda Eva (one of the stars of the Salvador’s famous street carnival), and percussionist Lan Lan (ex musician of unforgettable Cassia Eller). Together, they brought a new Bahian flavor to the traditional samba neighborhood, Lapa in Rio de Janeiro.
The band rescues old sambas from the most important matrixes: Bahia and Rio. However, Moinho goes beyond, making a revival of the Tropicalia movement by bringing together Dorival Caymmi, Cartola and Novos Baianos, mixing electric guitar with acoustic sounds, and performing a new encounter of the music from Bahia and Rio de Janeiro.
